Which band was supported by The Who in 1967, hailed by Elvis Presley, and recently played a Sydney club with lots of Electro-Voice gear?
In the mid 1960’s three acts dominated the music scene: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Herman’s Hermits. If you guessed the latter was the answer to the question, you are right.
In 1965, Herman’s Hermits were beckoned to meet Elvis Presley, a huge fan of the band. Two members caught up with The King during a movie shoot in Hawaii as they travelled home from their last US show that year. Two years later, on another US tour, they were supported for three months by none other than The Who. Now, 50 years after they formed, Herman’s Hermits are touring Australia as part of their 50th Anniversary Tour and they have just played at Club Menai in Sydney’s south.
Since the 1st of April, 1964, Herman’s Hermits have had 23 hit singles, 10 hit albums, 3 major movies, and record sales of over 75 million. Although most of that success came in the late sixties and early seventies, the band has continued to play and tour almost every year, and to their credit they still average around 200 shows per year.
If the recent show at Club Menai is anything to go by, the band still has a great following and their fans are more than impressed with the quality of the show.
Now we may be accused of some bias here, but we all know that good music shows require good sound. In Club Menai’s case, the sound is delivered through Electro-Voice loudspeaker systems, amps and a selection of EV microphones carefully selected by the club’s sound engineer to match the band and performance style.
